Das
Deutsche Reich und den 1.Weltkrieg 1914-1918 - This is a very
professional German site with a unique perspective on the Great War.
In addition to event chronologies, organization of the Imperial Army,
the German soldier and his society, and a section on German leadership
during the war, there are other sections dealing with narrower themes-anecdotes
(a great story of how Gefreiter Plenus, JR374, was awarded the personal
Iron Cross First Class of Count zu Dohna, former commander of the
S.M.S. Möwe) as well as special interest topics. One of the latter
is a section detailing the service of units from Wetzlar and its environs.

Punch

Louisiana
French Soldier in WW1 - In 1918, Arcille Guillory was sent to
war in Europe. Arcille was a native Louisiana French speaker with
only a few years of public schooling - it is said that he taught himself
to read, write, and eventually speak in English. Interestingly, Arcille
kept a diary of his experiences in the Great War, recorded in broken
but intelligible English. His effort to express complex emotions and
to record history in a near-foreign language makes this a valuable
piece of Louisiana history. This is a great read: http://www.eatel.net/~bouclette/arcilleindex.htm
Erich
Maria Remarque (1898-1970) - (pseudonym for Erich Paul Remark
- the German family name Kramer spelled backwards). A German novelist,
who became famous with his work "IM WESTEN NICHTS NEUES (All
Quiet on the Western Front, 1929)", one of the best-known anti-war
novels ever, which depicted the horrors of war from the point of view
of the ordinary soldiers. In his works Remarque focused largely on
the collapse of the old European world and values from 1914 through
the cold war. Although his later novels also were successful, Remarque
lived in the shadow of his "big" first book. http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/remarque.htm
